Salem sent first white men to Saugus
Governor John Winthrop arrived in Salem with charter from King Charles I
and a thousand immigrants
Legislature changed name from Saugus, the Indian Name, to Lin (now
called Lynn), in honor of Rev. Samuel Whiting, who had officiated at St.
Margaret's Church in Lynn Regis, England
Colonial Governor Endicott approved application for William Dixey,
one of the first five early settlers, to retire to Saugus
